Raising the standard
of balustrading in
South Africa.
BASA is an industry-led association focused on improving the safety, quality, competence and accountability of balustrades, handrails and protective barrier systems.
We bring manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators, installers and built-environment stakeholders together around better practice, clearer responsibility and safer outcomes.
01 Safety. Quality. Accountability.
Balustrades are life – safety systems – not simply architectural finishes.
About BASA
A dedicated association for a specialised industry
A focused platform for a specialised industry.
Balustrading sits at the intersection of design, engineering, glazing, metal fabrication, installation, property management and public safety. Yet the sector is often fragmented across different trades and professional scopes.
BASA is being built around the realities of making and installing balustrades, to be useful to the businesses and stakeholders doing the work: designing systems, sourcing materials, fabricating components, managing site conditions and taking responsibility for completed installations.
Complete-system thinking
Design, materials, fixings, workmanship and records all contribute to a safe outcome.
Vision
A better-connected industry
To give the industry a focused platform for technical collaboration, practical guidance, skills development, improved documentation and constructive engagement with standards bodies, professionals and public authorities.
Mission
Clarity that improves practice
To help members understand changing expectations, access practical guidance, improve evidence and handover processes, develop skills, raise recurring technical concerns and participate in the direction of the industry.
Commitment
A level playing field
BASA is not intended to favour one material, system or commercial supplier.
Our focus is on responsible practice, verifiable performance and a level playing field for businesses prepared to work to an appropriate standard.
Safe performance depends on the complete system - materials, glass, posts, rails, connections, anchors, fixings, substrate, workmanship and maintenance.
What we are working towards
A safer, more professional sector
Turning shared standards into safer outcomes.
Better records protect the client, installer, manufacturer, people who use the building and every other relevant stakeholder.
Guidance
Clearer industry guidance for design, manufacture, supply, installation, inspection and maintenance.
Competence
Better-defined competency pathways for installers, inspectors and other industry participants.
Traceability
More consistent evidence, handover records and traceability across the life of an installation.
Representation
Constructive participation in standards, regulation and public-safety discussions.
Practical tools
Resources that help compliant businesses work efficiently and demonstrate the quality of their work.
A collective voice
Stronger representation for responsible manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators and installers.

Consulting with the DTIC
Closing the gaps in balustrading compliance.
The digital platform will ultimately aim to facilitate a Balustrading CoC in terms of new and existing installations, replacements, material alterations and major safety-related repairs for both first occupancy and property transfers.
BASA is currently engaged in a formal submission to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition in response to the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Amendment Bill, 2026. The submission focuses on strengthening the national compliance framework for balustrades, handrails and other permanent protective barrier systems.
Our central position is that South Africa already has legislation and technical requirements intended to prevent falls and regulate the performance of balustrades. The problem is that, without a dedicated and consistently applied Certificate of Compliance, important responsibilities can fall between the scopes of designers, engineers, manufacturers, installers, glazing contractors, building inspectors and property owners. A barrier may therefore appear complete without there being one clear, auditable record confirming that the fully installed system has been appropriately designed, installed, inspected and documented.
Help shape BASA.
BASA welcomes interest from responsible manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators, installers, professionals and property-sector stakeholders who want to contribute to a safer and more professional balustrading industry.
